How can I increase my browsing and downloading speed? I have a 56K modem and can't afford ADSL or ISDN.
A good way to speed up downloads is to change the MTU (maximum transmission unit) setting in Windows. From Control Panel, double-click the Network icon, select Dial-Up Adapter and click Properties. On the Dial-Up Adapter Properties dialog box click the Advanced tab. In the Property list, the MTU value is listed as IP Packet Size. You can set this to Large (1,500), Medium (1,000) or Small (576).
There's also an Automatic option, which is the default. This results in a value of 576 being used if you have an ordinary modem or terminal adapter. If you change this setting to Large then the chances are that you'll get better performance.
If you're still using Windows 95 and don't have this Advanced settings dialog box then the default value is 1,500 anyway.
